Workspace

The importance of a desk

Some interesting thoughts, especially the 'failed social experiment' with 'nomadic workers'. There is a diiference in expectations between a mobile workspace and being required to sit in a different seat each time you go to the office. I think we can create our workspace anywhere we are which in my case is almost always a morass of papers and objects. And I never throw anything out.

iPhone Phonograph

iPhone Phonograph

Taking his cue from a turn-of-the-century Magnavox gramophone Designer Matt Richmond's inspiring piece transforms your iPhone into a beautiful sculptural audio console. Using passive amplification the iPhone horn allows your iPhones speaker to be heard clearly across the room; a fantastic way to listen to podcasts or Pandora. Made with a wooden dock of walnut (ash, poplar, or hickory) this is a beautiful object to inspire you when you are working from your office. A great idea to try on our own.

Retro Flip Clock

Retro Flip Clock

A wonderful modern addition to one of my favorite pieces of '70's nostalgia, Torre & Tagus Designs Retro Flip Clock features a clean attractive design that will look right at home with the FLIQLO screensaver and Flipclock for the iPhone. While big on style this clock comes up short on function; the clock doesn't have an alarm making this more of an item for your desk than bedroom.

Moleskine Project Planner

This is certainly a far more elegant way to plan projects than the taping together sheets of A3 method I currently use. Perfect for both short and long term projects, the Moleskine Project Planner features one giant sheet of heavyweight paper folded in to 54 zig-zag accordion pages. This allows you to pull out the folds so you can view whole project linearly. Very nice.

Brionvega ts522

Once upon a time there was a grey and square world, all in black and white, and then the revolution of forms, the invention of colour arrived. Brionvega.

It is an important heritage that requires on the one hand respect for the past, and on the other a vision propelled towards the future, as required by a world which is more and more technological.

Since the sixties, Brionvega is synonymous with stylistic innovation, technology, and aesthetic sense.

Brionvega recently reissued Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper's ts502 radio as the ts522 with up-to-date technology and a return to its original interface panel. This is a simple, beautiful piece of design. I don't listen to local radio anymore but with a device a beautiful as this it wouldn't matter.

Jonas Damon 2B Ltd. Edition Vacuum Tube Radio

tuberadio.jpg

Though a subject of some debate many people still prefer the sound that is produced by the distortion characteristics of tube-based amplifiers. Tube amplifiers, and in this case the amplifier in a radio, are often characterized as sounding warmer or fatter. I tend to agree but I think for most people it's simply fun to own a piece of nostalgia. The Jonas Damon 2B marries the old with new through attractive design and the ability to hook up your more modern iPod through an input jack in the back. You can even watch the tubes at work (and warm your hands at the same time).

You can buy them individually, or in "crates" of six. Cute.
