Tote Bag

Tin Cloth Tote

tintote.jpg
Though designed for hunting and fishing the Tin Cloth Tote is a fantastic way to carry around the heavy urban gear you may be forced to carry from place to place. Perfect for people like me who wouldn't be caught dead carrying something with flowers plastered all over the side. Filson - Tin Cloth Tote

Rubber Tote Bag

rbbrbag.png

Sounds great but at a whopping $75 it is to be appreciated more than used.

Americans alone toss out about 300 million tires every year. The big thinkers of the world are working on creative ways to reuse this vast quantity of rubber – ideas include mixing ground-up tires with urethane to create sidewalks or burning them like coal to produce energy. Meanwhile, some designers are thinking a little smaller. With the large Rubber Tote, discarded tires are hand-cut and hand-sewn into a vessel that can be used indoors or out as planter for a small tree, carrying container, space for gardening supplies or anything else that can benefit from solidly constructed storage. Modeled on ancient leather-crafting techniques, these durable containers are each unique and offer a functional alternative to the landfill. Not guaranteed to be watertight. Made in Egypt.

Porter Grocery Tote

portertote.jpg

Porter introduces it's replacement for the increasingly less ubiquitous plastic shopping bag. This must be the category of bag with the highest growth as I keep coming across all types of beautiful designs. I like Porters homage to the brown bags of old. Their concept follows:

The new tote bag named “grocery tote” has such minimal design which reminds us of paper bag of market.

The special cotton fabric called “typewriter cloth”, which is used for the printing ribbon of type writer, is selected for the material of this bag. This dense fabric is also used for down-jacket which keeps fine down. By gluing poplin lining together, the firm texture like paper is produced.

Moreover, the “EVA sheet (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer)”, the interlining which functions as glue, is a ecologic material which doesn't belch dioxin when it's burnt. It is gathering attention from various industries as a vinyl-alternative material.

Minimizing the use of thread, parts, and sewing process such as stitch and seam, you can enjoy the realistic “paper bag texture” realized by only pressing on this “grocery tote”.
Let's start something for our future.

Inspired by nature, tradition and the outdoors, each tote is sure to get you noticed. Fill one with groceries, your everyday essentials or both! Just prepare to be stopped by strangers and asked where you got your tote. Afterwards you will totally have an idea what it is like to be a celebrity, a socially conscious celebrity that is.

Good gift idea. $76.00US.

(Beautiful)bags

Yes they are a little bit cheesey but in a good way. I'm sure these would be an absolute hit with some members of my family. Nanna and Nanny might just find one of these bags, using a picture of their Grandchildren, under the tree at Christmas.

AUM Tote Bag

aumtote.jpg

These one of a kind tote bags, handmade by Red Flag Design in Vancouver, are made from reclaimed sailcloth and reinforced with hypalon. What that means is that you have a highly durable bag that looks great and is somewhat kind to the environment. More from their description:

Cut from naturally textured cruising sailcloth that would otherwise be discarded, this tote's rich history is highlighted and reinforced by perfectly simple, handmade details. The sennet-knotted nylon handle is attached securely to the tote by enameled metal grommets and marine-grade rubber, allowing for heavy loads to be carried comfortably and with confidence. Each tote also sports an ample zippered pouch for the secure stowing of modern life's smaller flotsam & jetsam.

The AUM (Circles) Tote is available for $198.00 from Branch.

Red Flag make some pretty exciting duffle bags as well and I hope to introduce those in the near future.

Lug Paddy Wagon Work Tote

I discovered this collection while ordering a coffee at the Just Us Girls shop in downtown Charlottetown. Overall the quality is good and in addition to the common black pictured above there bags are available in original and lively colours. The Paddy Wagon Work Tote features a removable padded sleeve that is perfect for a laptop or file folders. Also included are a strap on back for luggage handle along with multiple storage pockets for all the multitude of gadgets and tools you might carry about. $75.00US from Lug.

Orla Kiely Leather Satchel

orlakiely.jpg

I'm out of my element here but appreciate the color and relative simplicity of this bag. Orla Kiely "has a unique, immediately recognisable design language, developed through graphic patterns that celebrate her optimistic spirit. As down-to-earth as her designs are popular, the key to what drives Orla is her fixation on the evolution of a signature style, devotion to quality and practicality". Lacking the sensibilities of her clientele I prefer the form that this reversible leather satchel. All leather with webbing trims. At 32cmx 30cm x 10cm, it should handle a small laptop. £ 290.00. You should check out the other work in the catalogue - beautiful patterns.

Coach Nylon Weekend Tote

coachshoulder.jpg

I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that this nylon bag costs as much as it's leather cousin - it's coach after all. The Coach Legacy Nylon Weekend Tote (that's a mouthful) is "an essential weekend or work bag, this lightweight tote includes plenty of pockets and a convenient zipper closure". It includes inside zip patch pockets, multi-function pocket and pen loops, zip top closure, outside front and back pocket with two small open side pockets, Hampton calfskin, soft pebble and vachetta trim, and a fabric lining. $448.00US at Coach.

Porter Labour Bags

portlabour.jpg

I saw this wonderful carryall while wasting time near a decrepit zoo in the hightech heartland of Taiwan Hsinchu. It's amazing how you can find these little gems in out of the way places and yet you can't get a decent cup of coffee.

This Carryall comes from Porters newish Labour collection - I call this the carry all as the store owner had no idea what the exact name was and I can't read Japanese. It has a large main pocket with enough inside spaces to carry all your mobile gadgets and necessary gear. All pockets close with very secure velcro and the strap is quite good; if you are carrying heavy loads you might wish it had padding on the strap as this bag has none. If you are carrying really heavy loads perhaps you should read My Bag Is Killing Me from the NYT. The top of the bag is interesting as you can choose to leave the top slightly open, like a ladies or small shopping bag, or close it shut which forces you to lose one carrying handle. In this fashion it looks more like a deep messenger. Materials are good and it looks great (you are 'required' to try on bags in Taiwan). Certainly a keeper.

Hard to find this bag elsewhere but it is available online here.

UM Wool Tote

wooltote.jpg

Being a male I tend to quickly and frequently forget about the needs of our better halves in their never ending quest to find the perfect bag, purse or tote in which to carry their daily necessities. I don't know how women do it - I can't imagine not having my stuff in a bag I can throw over my shoulder. Few of the bags I have or want to have are as beautiful as this UM Tote designed by Josh Jakus. You can feel good about owning this design - the UM Tote is made from 100% industrial wool felt, with a Lampo metallized coil locking zipper, and nylon stitching (Industrial felt is made from approximately 85% factory excess wool and 15% mixed fibers). This is a sustainable product.

This ingenious design is the result of its simplicity -- the bag is nothing more than two layers of a cleverly shaped piece of felt and a zipper. When entirely unzipped, the bag lays completely flat. When zipped, it becomes a beautiful -- and super-useful -- bag.

The UM Tote is available in three zipper colors: Orange, Blue, and Green for $114.00US plus shipping.
