STM bags - a success story

STM started in 1998 in classical "Silicon Valley" start-up mode — in a garage, but in Bondi rather than Palo Alto. The founder, Ethan Nyholm, American-born but living in Sydney, was IT manager at a fashion house where Jacobs was the accessory buyer.

In the late 1990s, he bought a laptop, but being more into T-shirts and chinos than business suits, he thought available laptop bags not only clunky but in conflict with his individual sartorial tastes.

He found a bubble-wrap padded postal envelope that would hold the laptop and stuffed it into a sports backpack. That, and the interest his backpack produced among his friends, began his journey towards STM.
