The form is something commonly seen in many bags costing much less but the detailing makes for a very visually striking bag.
A designer alternative to the standard laptop messenger, this cross body bag from Diesel will be a perfect companion for years to come. The Mitchell is a revamp of last seasons Betray bag made of nylon, finished with leather, and has plenty of pockets throughout to keep you organised. This classic bag has a lined main compartment and is finished with snap button and zipper closures. It is big enough to hold your laptop, personal technology, a bottle of water and a few of your favorite books.

The leather postal messenger is J.Crew's recreation of the oil-tanned mailbags carried by the US Postal Service from 1868 until the 1970s. From their product page: ' Designed to last a lifetime and improve with age, our hand-oiled, hand-stained, hand-burnished postal messengers are sewn by experienced artisans on century-old leather machines. Each piece of leather is carefully selected for quality; each historically correct, heavy copper rivet is set by hand. As a result, each "original" leather postal messenger is a one-of-kind with its own unique character'. Sounds romantic and perhaps accounts for the price. The strap looks good but I think the buckle closure might be annoying. Available at J.Crew for $795.00.

Not that I have been looking particularly hard but this bag from Evisu is one of the better made messenger bags in denim I have seen. Born from cult Japanese jean label Evisu, comes this classic Selvedge denim messenger bag perfect for day to day use. Stylish. This bag will set you back $225.00 which seems expensive to me until I see the price of their jeans. Glad I'm not stylish and only wear Levi's. Though I don't like it as much, there is also an Evisu denim shoulder bag.

I can't believe I missed this one. The bbp Biz collection are a hybrid bag that can be a backpack, messenger bag, or even a briefcase and looks conservative enough to take anywhere. If conservative and understanted are not your thing - and black can be a bore - they have a multitude of other styles and colours. The bbp Biz collection has all the features you would expect from a bag of this class: tons of pockets, top loading compartment, padded compartment for your laptop, luggage handle bit so you can attach to your wheeled luggage, and a useful umbrella holder. Of note is their Bak2Pak carrying system which evenly distributes weight to reduce strain on your shoulders and back. The bag conveniently converts from dual strap to single strap or the strap can be removed entirely to carry like a briefcase. I'll be covering bbp bags in the future. Another picture after the jump.

More from Moop - handmade bags from Massachusetts.
The messenger is made of tan canvas and lined in a super durable, orange-ish red, coated cordura rip-stop (the lining is quite water-resistant!!) The top flap has a concealed snap panel with two deep pockets underneath. There is also a deep pocket across the back of the bag.The inside compartment has ample space. Enough to comfortably fit a 13” laptop and several large books. There are also two pockets inside – perfect for cell phones and ipods. This bag is versatile – works well for books and laptops or even toting around kid things (diapers, wipes, entertainment).
The strap is long enough to wear across your chest (messenger style) or on your shoulder (tote style).

The weather we have been experiencing lately has me thinking how valuable the Sultan Waterproof Backpack I found last year would be if you were foolish enough to venture out in this nastiness. Having a bag that can protect your gear from the rain is a pretty wise investment when you live here. With somewhat the same protection but without the roll top comes another option in Chrome Transport's Backbone messenger pack.
The Backbone is designed for for those who prefer the double strap support of backpacks, but still want the durability and weatherproof attributes of messenger bags. It's got the large main space you would expect plus a secret stash pocket and dual strap utility attachment points. You'll need a sleeve for your laptop which they sell separately but as always I recommend the Tom Bihn Brain Cell as they seem to offer the most protection.
Backbone messenger packs are $160.00US.
Others: Sultan Waterproof Backpack and Chrome’s Kevlar Shuttle Bag.

Yes they are a little bit cheesey but in a good way. I'm sure these would be an absolute hit with some members of my family. Nanna and Nanny might just find one of these bags, using a picture of their Grandchildren, under the tree at Christmas.
