So Apple wants you to pony up $14.99 for Pixar's Cars when you already own the DVD? Nuh-uh. Don't think so. Seems like you should be able to copy that DVD right to your iPod.

You can, provided you have the right tools and some time to kill. With free software and this tutorial, you can copy almost any DVD in your library to your iPod for on-the-go viewing. Let's get ripping.

Learning the shell

Stuffed in: 2 Howto
Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are helpful for many tasks, but they are not good for all tasks. I have long felt that most computers today do not use electricity. They instead seem to be powered by the "pumping" motion of the mouse! Computers were supposed to free us from manual labor, but how many times have you performed some task you felt sure the computer should be able to do? You ended up doing the work by tediously working the mouse. Pointing and clicking, pointing and clicking.

I once heard an author remark that when you are a child you use a computer by looking at the pictures. When you grow up, you learn to read and write. Welcome to Computer Literacy 101. Now let's get to work.

Use Quicksilver for quick timed reminders

Stuffed in: 2 Quicksilver
Using the latest version, B49, I found two interesting actions: Run at Time... and Run after Delay.... For the longest time, I couldn't figure out what type of object would have these actions defined. Then when I was playing around with the Proxy Objects in the Catalog section, I noticed the Last Command object. I tried fooling around with it, and low and behold, there was Run at Time... and Run after Delay... in the Action list! There are tons of possibilities for these actions, but one that I thought was very interesting was the ability to set quick reminders for yourself.

Matt Haughey's Travel Tips

Stuffed in: 2 Hertz

Matt Haughey offers up a few travel tips he has been meaning to share, including finding a hotel which offers a little bit extra space so that you can have a little bit of separation between parents and child.

When you travel with a baby, it helps to have an extra room in your hotel so you can have some separation of space and your child won’t see you and want to be picked up at 3am. It’s not always feasible to get a hotel suite, but I’ve found a real bargain in Embassy Suites. It’s pretty much an average Holiday Inn style room, but it’s about 15ft longer, giving you a living room area in front of the bedroom complete with desks and sofas. We put the baby’s crib in there, and could put her to bed early and still read, talk, or watch TV in the other room while she slept. Plus, we could let her wake up slowly in her own room. Bonus points for this hotel giving a free breakfast buffet for two with every room. The price isn’t much higher than a typical business travel hotel and works wonders for a traveling family.

It's tough to find hotels like that in Asia but it's worth keeping in mind.

25 tips for a better flight

Stuffed in: 2 Flight

From James Wysong comes a list of sound advice to help make a better flight. My favourites are below and the complete list can be found on the Msnbc site.

Cross-pack with a travel companion. That way, if the airline loses your luggage, you’ll still have half the clothes you need for the week.

Bring dollar bills, and if the kid behind you starts kicking your seat, bribe him with money to stop. Tell him that if he can keep from kicking your seat for the remainder of the flight, he’ll get $5. Works like a charm.

Unless you are traveling with children, always ask for an exit-row seat. You’ll get more legroom.

Practice patience, and be prepared to test it abundantly.

Have great sex the night before you fly. You will be in a better mood and be more likely to sleep on the airplane.

Travel tip: Avoid airport rogue wifi networks

Stuffed in: 2 Hack
I was recently at New York's JFK airport in the JetBlue terminal, where they have prominent signs offering free wi-fi, courtesy of the airline. But when I went to connect, I noticed that several options were available including one labeled "default" and another labeled "JetBlue free hotspot." It turns out that the former was the actual free hotspot and the latter was the honeypot.

How to Survive an Airport Trip With Your Kids

Stuffed in: 2 Airport

As usual common sense advice prevails. I had higher hopes for this article - "give every kid a gameboy"? - please, how about a book.

If you’re like most parents, the one part of winter vacation you dread the most is keeping your kids occupied during a two-, three- or five-hour plane trip. In the larger scheme of things, though, the time spent in the air is the easy part; what you should really be concerned about is herding your kids into and through your local airport, and through and out of the airport on the other end. Here’s how to go about it.

I think the real problem is keeping kids occupied while you are flying but then most of our flights with children are at least 12 hours.

6 Tips On How To Choose The Right Laptop Bag

Stuffed in: 2 Laptop Bag

From the Rushfaster Blog:

It is very important to ensure that you pick the right laptop bag for you, here are 3 simple reasons:

1. Vanity: Just because you have a mobile computer it doesn’t mean that you have to look like a mobile geek.
2. Ergonomics: If you’re carrying the wrong type of bag for the job, you could injure your back and end up looking like quasi-modo.
3. Functionality: Make sure the laptop bag you are using meets your needs for protection and storage.

Packing Tips for Women

Stuffed in: 2 Women

Though targeted to women these tips could potentially apply to anyone. As a guy my pick of the lot is below but the advice does get better.

It's worth splurging a little to get just the right clothes for your trip. For durable, lightweight travel clothes, consider Ex Officio (www.exofficio.com, tel. 800-644-7303), TravelSmith (www.travelsmith.com, tel. 800-950-1600), Tilley's (www.tilley.com, tel. 800-363-8737), and REI (www.rei.com). In general, the color black dresses up easily and can be extremely versatile.
