Taiwan handset makers betting on smartphones

Stuffed in: 2 Smart Phone
With only a small chance of seeing major expansion in the worldwide market share, Taiwan's handset makers are looking upon smartphones to be their next major profit driver, according to industry sources.

According to DigiTimes Research, Taiwan's handset shipments for 2006 will total about 146 million units, accounting for 15% of worldwide shipments, up from 10% in 2005.

However, the global handset market is quickly consolidating, with major vendors, such as Nokia, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics, having a high proportion of in-house production. The slow growth for outsourcing will be an obstacle to Taiwan makers' shipment growth, the sources noted.

Although Taiwan's share of worldwide handset shipments, according to DigiTimes Research, may increase to 15-21%, the makers will have a mountain to climb to achieve the 40% goal set for 2008 by the Industrial Development Bureau of Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Competition has been growing strong from EMS suppliers, and increases in orders from major vendors can hardly be expected, the sources said.

But the makers are changing their strategy, developing smartphones as their next profit driver, the sources remarked.

LG's Shine Designer's Edition

Stuffed in: 2 shine

The art is wonderful but goes under appreciated on the back of a phone. I don't see how this adds value but perhaps customers in the Korean market see it differently.

LG Electronics presented 'Shine Designer's Edition', a special limited edition decorated with Korean font designed by Li Sang Bong, a renowned Korean designer. On the back of the mobile phone was engraved with the original text of a poem of Yoon Dong Joo, one of the most beloved poets in Korea.

The Shine is a flagship model of LG Electronics' mobile business and the second model of its black label series. It has been gaining wide popularity with sales of 30 million units per day since the launch, and a company official said that this Designer's Edition was particularly fused with the traditional beauty of Korea with the company’s hope to make it a globally popular item.

LG signs up Prada to design a new mobilephone

Stuffed in: 2 Prada
LG is not to be left out of the couture-designer tie-in, and has announced a partnership with Prada in the development of a new mobile phone model.

The companies are taking a slightly different approach to, for example, Motorola and Dolce and Gabbana, who merely released a different-coloured and rebranded model of the Motorazr.

Prada and LG have apparently “jointly explored and developed all aspects of this new phone”, and not just the exterior at that.

LG KG810 Chocolate Phone Review

Stuffed in: 2 Chocolate

lgchoc.jpg

It won a few Phone of The Year awards, but the LG Chocolate phone franchise has only just begun. Its latest confectionary delight, the KG810, hopes for similar success.

So is it as desirable as our Fashion Phone of the Year? Sadly this ‘Chocolate’ can’t emulate the KG800’s tantalising design but then that’s a very big ask. Lying dormant it still commands a hint of the minimalist mystery but the spell is broken by silver trim around the phone and on the lip. Unlike the slider form, there are limitations with the clamshell, the signature front LED touch keys are confined to three music player controls, and it definitely loses impact compared to its more illuminating comrade.

The phone itself is very svelte and trim, and its glossy fascia deserves a certain amount of attention and touching. But overdo it and the phone will become smeared with your mucky finger marks.

Flip it open and a rather appealing chequered keypad introduces itself. Like the KG800, it’s not touch-sensitive but nicely bevelled, and fantastic to use with the keys and navigation pad generously sized and responsive. LG likes to offer clearly defined shortcuts galore on its keypads and the KG810 is no exception. Access to contacts, messaging, favourites, camera, phone profiles and the built-in MP3 player are all but one click away.

Anyone already familiar with LG will find nothing new on the user interface and icon-driven menu, and newcomers won’t take long to master its ways. The UI is pretty intuitive and straightforward. Also, for a 220x176-pixel resolution display, it’s remarkably sharp and vibrant.
