Caroline Chiu - Dreaming: A Chinese Wunderkammer

Caroline Chiu
Subtitled: Caroline Chiu: Polaroids as Chinese Ink Painting

These photographs are taken from Hong Kong artist Caroline Chiu's larger series entitled Dreaming: A Chinese Wunderkammer. Wunderkammer were 17th- and 18th-century European "wonder rooms" or "cabinets of curiosity"--some of the earliest known "museums"--which contained specimens reflecting the natural world, anthropology, archaeology, relics, and art. The late Qing emperor Qianlong, known for his passion for the arts, also pursued this type of collecting.

In Chiu's case, she collects, by photography, objects representing the material culture of traditional China: bonsai, scholar's rocks, flowers, artworks depicting the animal zodiac, and, here, goldfish. Her choice of subjects makes reference to historical Chinese culture; her graphic photographic images of goldfish suggest the brushstrokes of traditional Chinese ink painting and the sweeping abstract shapes of Chinese writing.
Because the images were taken with a rare 20 x 24 inch Polaroid camera--for which film is no longer manufactured--the exhibition is also an elegy to the era of Polaroid cameras and film.

Transitloungers: Just Landed - 61 Hours

Jer Thorp is interested in visualizing 'information that isn't implicitly shared - but instead is inferred or suggested'. In this piece he visualizes international flight movements of those on twitter who tweet 'just landed in...' or 'just arrived in...'.

This piece looks for tweets containing the phrases 'just landed in...' or 'just arrived in...'. Locations from these tweets are located using MetaCarta's Location Finder API. The home location for the traveling users are scraped from their Twitter pages. The system then plots these voyages over time."

The QR Cloud Project

The QR Cloud Project

The QR Cloud Project consists of seven artworks that make use of QR technology to present coded micro stories, poems and proverbs written by Dutch writers, poets and scientists. Famous sociologist Abram de Swaan, creative team Kim Triesscheijn and Jarr Geerligs, and multi-talent Tim den Besten, among others, were invited to write a short, inspiring message for curious passengers-by. Their statements were transformed into two-dimensional QR codes, which were printed and placed on seven blinded windows of a former SM club in the Westerpark district of Amsterdam.

Thavorn Ko-udomvit: Utilitarianism

Thavorn Ko-udomvit: Utilitarianism

With the heat and torrential rain July isn't the best time of year to be visiting Bangkok but if you find yourself in the city during this time I can't imagine a better escape from the rain than a visit to one of the many galleries throughout the city.

I'll be in a completely different paradise (Atlantic Canada) during the showing of the latest solo exhibition by Thavorn Ko-udomvit. Inspired by the current political turmoil and conflict in Thailand Thavorn has created an exhibition presenting various kinds of arts from photography to installation art, from video art to interactive art.

From the artists' statement:

The exhibition is inspired by the current political turmoil and conflict which result in the separation among people who have different ideas. The colors that were used to separate people into two groups are now reversely interpreted in order to propose the idea of unity and at the same time erase the ego and individuality a certain group has towards their belief. Artistic techniques are applied to create positive yet sarcastic artworks that question, urging opinions and suggesting ideas to help appreciate the worthwhile notions found from both groups.

Eduardo Rubio's People of Bangkok

People of Bangkok

I love these illustrations by Eduardo Rubio of people in Bangkok going about their day. His portfolio website is a bit painful to use but luckily he has more excellent work on Behance - in particular have a look at his Works on paper and Ordinary paintings projects. Beautiful work.

Revaz Todua: Thailand

Revaz Todua: Thailand

I'm reliving Thailand through the eyes of Moscow based photographer Revaz Todua. His other work is arguably better but this set keeps me satiated until I can return to see these locations in person.

Full Crate & Mar - She Was Fly

A more mellow musical interlude to start the week and a nice contrast to 'Miss Shanghai by The Shanghai Restoration Project' I shared on the 18th. The camera work in this piece makes me a bit dizzy but it's visually compelling.

Catch more of the beautiful model in this film in their Promo film for 'Conversations With Her' EP here.

Traveling Denim
Traveling Denim

Travelling Denim, a short film by Takayuki Akachi, documents the fade and wear of a pair of jeans over the course of a two year trip across fifty countries.

"The denim walks freely in the world, meets people, changes and fades."

Wonderful shots of jeans, bags and the different cultures and surroundings seen during the trip.
